    The Week 3 shuffle

This timed out very nicely for Week 3 of Couch-to-5K.
    1. 16 Military Wives ... The Decemberists
    2. Ch-Ch-Check It Out ... Beastie Boys
    3. Cannonball ... The Breeders
    4. We Used to Be Friends ... The Dandy Warhols
    5. Woo Hoo ... The 5.6.7.8's
    6. Seven-Nation Army ... The White Stripes
    7. Crazy ... Gnarls Barkley
So it's been about six weeks since I decided to start the Couch-to-5K program again, and I'm only on Week 3. I am very, very slow.

    Magic 8 iPod

Go to your music player of choice and put it on shuffle. Say the following questions aloud, and press play. Use the song title as the answer to the question. NO CHEATING.

What does next year have in store for me? ... "Waste Time," The Fire Theft
Sounds like nothing will be changing in '07 ...

What's my love life like? ... "Jackie Blue," Ozark Mountain Daredevils
I don't really know what to make of that.

What do I say when life gets hard?... "Why Don't You Write Me?" Simon & Garfunkel

What do I think of on waking up? ... "Kate," Ben Folds Five
Our former neighbor, Kate, moved to Alaska recently. I just heard from her a few days ago. They were having "unseasonably warm" weather -- it was 10F!

Favorite saying? ... "Faraway Cookies," Caitlin McEwan
That's so spot-on it's scary. It's a song about cookies being "so high on the shelf." So we have shortness and cookie-eating. Yep.

Favorite place? ... "Into the Groove," Madonna
    Totally.

Drug of choice? ... "Holiday," Madonna
    I do love a vacation.

Describe myself. ... "If You Listen," Elizabeth Mitchell
That's not very descriptive, is it?

What is the thing I like doing most? ... "Song for Junior," Beastie Boys
Not far off. Junior and I do play music and dance quite a lot.

What is my state of mind like at the moment? ... "Prime of Life," Neil Young
It has been a nice day thus far.

    via Verbatim.

    Music for my brother

I made a New Year CD for my li'l brother because he listens to entirely too much Brad Paisley and I try to broaden his horizons. I make CDs for my dad sometimes, too, because he loves Rod Stewart far too much, but Dad always hates every last song on every last CD I send him.

When I asked Justin what he thought about the New Year CD, he said it was "weird." Oh well.

    Beanbag Chair Yo La Tengo
... I'm losing every race I run, I'm making misery out of fun.
This is a nice, bouncy song, music-wise. The lyrics are a little down. But it makes me want to boogie anyway.

    Beer & Kisses Amy Rigby
... We lived on beer and kisses, all hopped up on love and foam.
Love, love lost, beer, work, prayer. All it's missing is a dog and a pickup truck, and it would've been a CMA shoo-in. I was sure Justin would like it.

We Both Go Down Together The Decemberists
... And while the seagulls are crying, we fall, but our souls are flying.
I like the doomed romance in this song, and I like the way he says "luh-ove."

    Castanets Alejandro Escovedo
... She said she was mine, she told me twice. I like her better when she walks away.
This one is nice and sassy and rockin', all at the same time.

    Quattro (World Drifts In) Calexico
... You have to hit the ground running.
I saw Calexico for the first (and second and maybe third) time when they opened for Wilco a few years ago. Their mariachi-infused rock blew me away the first time, and I was more impressed with subsequent shows. "Quattro" has a slow, sultry burn.

    Think I'm In Love Beck
... I think I'm in love but it makes me kind of nervous to say so.
My brother went through a pretty wrenching breakup relatively recently, and it left him a bit skittish where relationships are concerned. Should lightning strike again for my brother (and I'm certain it will), I'm pretty sure he'll be kind of nervous to say so.

    Southern Gul Erykah Badu
    ... I'm from the South. I'm a Southern Gul.
I am from the South, but I've never felt all that Southern. "Southern Gul" makes me wish that wasn't so. Erykah Badu's voice is a like a warm hug from an old friend.

We Used to Be Friends The Dandy Warhols
... Come on now, sugar. Bring it on, bring it on, yeah.
I first heard this on "Veronica Mars." It's a catchy little ditty. And it always reminds me that I should remember to watch "Veronica Mars" because it's a great show. Also, there's a lot of clapping in the song, which makes it the perfect lead-in to ...

Clap Your Hands They Might Be Giants
... Clap your hands ... stomp your feet ... jump in the air!
This is on one of Piper's CDs, They Might Be Giants' "No." It's a fun song for dancing.

Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day Frank Black
... And when it's over and the clover has left the mountainside, you'll be king of what you survived.
A nice, laid-back song. It makes me happy and hopeful.

    The Pills Stopped Working Hem
... I spent my whole life looking for land but settled on the breakers.
Have I mentioned that I love Hem? Well I do. This song has a decidedly country-and-western sound to it.

Say Yes! to M!ch!gan! Sufjan Stevens
    ... Rivers run, interstate, Michigan.
I like Sufjan Stevens more each time one of his songs pops up on the iPod.

Porchlight Neko Case and Her Boyfriends
... I'm sorry to tread on your patience, my dear
Alex fell for Neko Case first. I followed not too long after. Mesmerizing voice. To be honest, I'm not that familiar with this particular song. I chose it randomly. And then I found that it's pretty and it's moving.

Ocean Breathes Salty Sun Kil Moon
... And maybe we'll get lucky and we'll both grow old.
I loved this song when Modest Mouse did it. I think this stripped down version even more.

    The Greatest Cat Power
... Once I wanted to be the greatest. No wind or waterfall could stop me. And then came the rush of the flood.
You know who else I love? Cat Power.

John Saw that Number Neko Case
... So he flew from the pit with the moon round his waist
Alex and my oldest nephew loves this song. They also love "Star Wars" and Legos. It's a great song regardless. The imagery is spectacular.

    The New Year Shuffle

What with all the Chemical Brothers and Air and My Morning Jacket, the iPod that I got for my birthday several years ago has felt for a very long time like Alex's iPod. When he got his own iPod for Christmas this year, I removed the music I didn't care for from mine. Our tastes do intersect quite a bit, but there's a lot of stuff he listens to that makes my ears so, so sad.

Anyway, I thought this development was going to make my iPod feel more like my iPod. It seems, though, that it's slowly turning into Piper's iPod. Fortunately, she's small enough that I can still dictate her music. Small victories, right?

    Kittens and scary, scary toys

I was looking at these sweet little dumplings this morning, and it reminded me that last night I dreamed about tiny baby kittens. Oodles and oodles of squirmy little kittens wandering around, so small their itty bitty eyes weren't even open yet. I don't remember anything else about the dream.

    Speaking of dreams ...

    Sing for me, little ones.

    Love songs

I signed up awhile back to participate in the Hello, Is It My Cheesy Love Song You're Looking For? CD swap.

I've made my CD, and I'm afraid it would disappoint Lionel Richie. I don't think it has quite as much "cheese" as the swap organizers were hoping for. It turns out that I don't have as much cheesy music as I thought I did. Or maybe I do, and I've fallen head over heels for it all and no longer recognize its cheesiness.

Regardless, I think it's a pretty good CD. What do you think? Here's the playlist:

You're The First, The Last, My Everything Barry White
... My kind of wonderful, that's what you are.
The slightly disco beat pushes this into the realm of cheesy. The lyrics are delightfully lovey-dovey, though. Barry White? You're my kind of wonderful.

Head Over Heels Tear for Fears
... Something happens, and I'm head over heels.
Upon further listening, I'm not sure this is really a "love" song. It's more angsty than I remembered it to be. I don't think it really belongs here. But I've already burned the CDs, so it stays.

Just The Way You Are Billy Joel
... I could not love you any better.
Billy Joel might not be the King of Cheese, but he's definitely on the Royal Court. He's a duke, at least. But you know what? I love him. L o v e. And this song slays me. Every time.

    Without You Motley Crue
... Without you in my life, I'd slowly wilt and die. But with you by my side, you're the reason I'm alive.
When I was but a wee lass, I had a thing for hair bands. Scoff if you will, but I think "Without You" stands the test of time. Vince Neil's gravelly-ness is the reason. It's not the reason I'm alive, though. Sorry, Vince.

More Than A Woman The Bee Gees
... I know that in a thousand years I'd fall in with you again.
My dad loves The Bee Gees. We were listening to their greatest hits in the car one day, and with every song, Dad would say, "This is my favorite Bee Gees song." I won't say I love the brothers Gibb, but I do love The Barry Gibb Talk Show. And "More Than A Woman" is, for the record, my favorite Bee Gees song.

Power of Love Huey Lewis & The News
... Don't need no credit card to ride this train.
I think we've found the King of Cheese, folks. I used to love Huey, too. I think it was before the hair bands stole my heart.

Can't Help Falling In Love Elvis Presley
... Take my hand. Take my whole life, too.
I can't decide if I think this song is cheesy or not. Rhinestone-studded Vegas Elvis is definitely cheesy, but hot young Elvis isn't. Okay, young Elvis is a little cheesy, too. But the voice! Golden!

All Out Of Love Air Supply
... I'm lying of you with my head on the phone, thinking of you 'til it hurts.
    Need I say more?

    Born to Run Bruce Springsteen
... Together, Wendy, we'll live with the sadness. I'll love you with all of the madness in my soul.
I thought Springsteen was cheesy for the longest time. I blame Courtney Cox. But then I actually listened to his songs, and man. He's such a great storyteller. "Born to Run" is such a young, desperate love story. It's one of my favorite songs.

    Something So Strong Crowded House
... Something so strong could carry us away.
This is also one of my favorite songs. Alex laughs at me for that. At least I don't look like a trucker, fella.

If Not For You Bob Dylan
... If not for you, winter would have no spring.
This is just a sweet song. And you can actually understand The Dylan.

    Concrete & Clay Unit 2+4
... You to me are sweet as roses in the morning.
Alex and I used this song as the recessional at our wedding. It still makes me smile.

Little More Time With You James Taylor
... I passed on the cocaine, said bye-bye to my methadone.
This is cheesy. And not a little strange. The song features methadone and a monkey. Whatever. I still like it.

God Only Knows The Beach Boys
... God only knows what I'd be without you.
This song is a little bit creepy ("What good would living do me?" What? Shake it off, guys! Let's go surfin'!), but it's so pretty! And the Beach Boys are cheesy. They sealed that with "Kokomo."

Just The Two Of Us Grover Washington Jr. & Bill Withers
... Darling, when the morning comes and I see the morning sun, I want to be the one with you.
Bill Withers is terribly underappreciated and cheesy all at the same time. I don't know what it is, exactly, that makes him cheesy. I suspect it's the saxophone.

I'll Dream of You Tonight Hem
... I know we'll be together tomorrow, but I'll dream of you tonight.
I first heard Hem when they opened for Beth Orton a few years ago in St. Louis. If I could get Sally Ellyson to come over and sing me lullabies every night, I would.

    Harvest Moon Neil Young
... Because I'm still in love with you, I wanna see you dance again.
Alex put this on I don't know how many mix tapes for me when we were in high school. It will always make me think of him, which means it will always be one of my favorites.

    Dearest Buddy Holly
... Dearest, oh you're the nearest to my heart. Please don't ever, ever say we'll part.
I used to have a two-CD Buddy Holly set. I wish I could find it. I think he's great. And this song is great, too.

I'm Glad You're Mine Al Green
... Baby, I'm so glad you're here. Baby, I've got something to say, my dear.
This song makes me swoon a little. And yet, there's an inherent cheesiness to the Reverend. It's a mystery.

Happier Than the Morning Sun Stevie Wonder
... I'm happier than the morning sun, and that's the way you said that it would be.
I could listen to this song every day.

    Remember Me Cat Power
... With you my life has been so wonderful.
This was originally an Otis Redding song, apparently. Cat Power's voice does it justice. I didn't want to like Cat Power because she calls herself Cat Power and, really. Come on. But then I listened to her and it didn't matter at all what she wanted to call herself. This is the song that made me love her.

    I love cheese,
from my head down to my knees.
    Between bread and then grilled,
Placed in a hot dog to fill,
    I love cheese
    I love cheese.
    Extra-sharp cheddar if you please.
    From blue to provolone.
At the deli or at home,

    The Apple Yogurt Shuffle

    Dear iPod,

You were doing such a nice job on the shuffle. It was so cohesive. Then you played Madlib. What's up with that? Whatever, iPod. But besides that little slip-up, you're doing really nice work this morning. I might even burn this one. Sans the Madlib. It just doesn't fit. I really don't know what you were thinking with that one. But anyway, keep up the good work.

    Sincerely,
    Nichole

  • Alex says, "By the way, here's the mix that's been running through my head all morning...
    1) Island Girl (first verse)
    2) Island girl (chorus, over and over and over again...)
    3) Island Girl (last verse..except it's like a bad dream and I can never actually get to the end of the song before it starts looping back over...

I think I need to put some new tapes in the car." (11:34 AM, October 27, 2006)
